英語版FF9日誌51 : State your sworn duty!

前回の会話の続きです。

Zidane:

So what do you say, Rusty? Friends? Come on, let's just enjoy this camping trip while it lasts.

Steiner:

Camping--you imbecile! Surely even you must know something about the Mist. The vicious monsters it spawns! The abnormalities it stirs in the mind and body! Princess, we must leave this dangerous place at once.

Zidane:

You've gotta be kidding. She hasn't even fully recovered yet.

Steiner:

Silence! Who asked for your opinion!?

Zidane:

Alright, tell me... How do you plan to get out of here? we're standing in a valley surrounded by tall cliffs. And last I heard, North Gate and South Gate were sealed off. Yeah. That's what I thought. The princess can barely walk right now. You went through this. You should know. I think we should rest here for now.

Steiner:

I will never follow your--

Zidane:

Steiner!!! State your sworn duty!

Steiner:
What else!? To protect Princess Garnet Til Alexandros! ...Very well. Until the princess recovers, I will guard this place with my life.

Zidane:

Sounds good to me. Vivi, let's get some rest.

State your sworn duty! 

stateというと、「国」とか「状態」という名詞の意味で使っているものがまず頭に浮かびます。ただ、ここでは名詞としては使っていません。

ここでは動詞として「述べる、明言する」という意味で使っています。つまり、「お前が誓った職務を述べよ！」と言ってるわけです。

「言う」というと、まず思いつくのはsayで、おそらくこれが一番一般的な言い方だと思います。ただただ、発言している感じですね。

対してstateは「正式に述べる」時に使います。当然堅苦しい意味合いになるので、普段はあまり使わないでしょう。

ここのシーンは、基本ラフな喋り方をしているジタンが、思考も発言も堅苦しいスタイナーに合わせて、「お前の使命とはなんなのだ！」と問いかけることで、スタイナー自身に今一番優先すべきことを認識させているシーンです。

単にsayではなくstateということで、スタイナー自身も自分のやるべきことを自覚できたという事でしょう。
